House of Learning

House of Learning is a centre where orphans and vulnerable children come to gain education and life skills.  House of Learning currently offers Form I, Form IV, QT, and pre QT levels to its students and also opens its doors to private candidates.  At House of Learning, we offer several other programs to enhance the education of these children.

"Voices of Children and Teenagers" on Moshi FM

Students from Form I - Form IV and above conduct a 1 hour program on Moshi FM where they debate and discuss issues with public interest (hosted by House of Learning).  The program is designed to take in all schools and orphanage centres, not just House of Learning, in the Kilimanjaro region.  The aims of the program are to:
          -

raise orphans’ voices

          -         build students’ self confidence
          -         increase the thinking capacity of students
          -         build good relationships between schools/institutions and the students
          -         increase competition among students
          -         prepare future leaders in various aspects (eg. journalism, politics, etc)
          -         build up their future careers
We are still looking for sponsors who can help with the funding for this project. Please contact us if you are interested.

Some of the topics recently discussed include:
          -         Addressing the increase of orphans and street children in Tanzania
          -         The contribution of globalization to the success of Tanzanian students
          -     What is the cause of and what can be done about the increase of poor performances of students in Tanzania

Day Care Centre

The Day Care Centre at House of Learning will provide a solution to the child care problem encountered by many families in and around Moshi.  The aim of the day-care program is to provide safe reliable day care for children in families where both parents work and to provide a mechanism for the House of Learning to obtain an income whilst supporting the community.

We are still looking for sponsors who can help with the funding for this project. Please contact us if you are interested.

Women Entrepreneurship Program

Women who find themselves widowed often do not possess the skills to support themselves and their family and slip in to poverty. Through the Widows Entrepreneurship Program, the House of Learning has funded widows to be educated in both business and practical skills which can be used to generate income.  We also provide a starting grant with which to start a business. After follow up, this program has been successful in all cases and so far all the widows in this program are supporting themselves and their families. As a result, the House of Learning is hoping to continue this process to enable further widows to independently lift themselves out of poverty. Training programs include:
          -         Businesses to make bead jewelry
          -         Businesses to make wooden kitchenware
          -         How to keep livestock and gardens

For this program to work effectively in the future we will be relying largely on donations from our generous supporters.  Please contact us if you are interested.

Combating HIV/AIDS, STIs, Drug Abuse, and Crime

At House of Learning, we work hard to educate our students about HIV/AIDS, STIs, drug abuse, and crime.  Particularly predmonant in those lacking education, there is a large need for these issues to be addressed in our young population.  House of Learning offers educational programs which highlight the detrimental effects of these activities and solutions to combat these problems.

Tutoring

House of Learning also provides extra study opportunity to students in the form of tutoring.  For a nominal fee (much lower than similar center) students are provided with a small group learning environment in which they are tutored in order to support their current studies.

Valley View Secondary School

Valley View Secondary School is affiliated and partnered with House of Learning.  As well, Valley View is managed and run by the same executive team as that which has founded and runs House of Learning. Currently providing Forms I-IV, Valley View is where House of Learning aims to send its students in the long term.  Students sponsored through House of Learning are enrolled in Valley View and students enrolled in House of Learning programs are similarly working towards being enrolled at this school.  Valley View is a reasonably priced, privately owned secondary school in the town of Moshi and is gaining a reputation as providing a top tier education for its students.

School Excursions

House of Learning has been fortunate enough to include school excursions for the leisure of our students and our staff.  We have been able to visit Meserani Snake Park in Arusha, Marangu Waterfalls, and Serengeti National Park.  We feel that trips such as these not only break the monotony of every day classes, but provide educational experiences that can complement school lessons and show that their studies are relevant in the real world.  For example, the Snake Park demonstrated biology classifications, the Marangu Waterfalls demonstrated features from physical geography, and the Serengeti demonstrated animals learned in biology and science.

On October 8, 2010 our students enjoyed a day out in Marangu Waterfalls where they learned more about physical geography and the Chagga culture.
